If you’re someone who rocks a desk job, you know your desk is a huge part of where you spend your life. Our experience at work is shaped in part by our desks. If you keep a messy desk that’s stocked with junk foods and sweets, you’re likely to get burnt out, lack focus, and feel sleepy or restless halfway through the afternoon.


I’d bet our desks can make or break our job performance and satisfaction. Your desk has a lot to do with how comfortable you feel at work, how fresh your mind is, and the level of vitality with which you tackle your work.


Here are some ways to ensure happiness while at your desk—some simple essentials to bring you a sense of spaciousness, joy, health, and comfort—no matter where you work.


Beauty is key: Decorate your work desk with art that inspires

Too many office workers fail to decorate their desk. Listen—you sit there for 40 hours a week; you might as well decorate so you don’t have to stare at beige walls.


I always hang at least one art piece by my desk as a source of inspiration. After all, when you look up from your computer to think for a second, do you want to look at a boring wall or a work of art that heightens your senses?


Even objects on your desk can serve as inspiration and keep you thinking outside the box. A unique mug can make you feel like a hotshot when you drink from it, a cool paperweight can be a great conversation starter, and a terrarium can help you feel fresh and alert.


Stay healthy at work with these desk essentials

For many office workers, afternoons bring a serious case of the munchies. But if you arm your workspace with healthy snacks, you’re less likely to fall victim to the glowing vending machine at the end of the hall. Some snacks I always keep in my desk drawer include fresh fruit, such as apples and grapes, pretzels, dark chocolate, nuts, and some delicious tea.


Honestly, keeping these snacks in my desk makes me feel happier than you know. (And not just because I love food!)


It’s also essential to stay hydrated during the workday. 75 percent of Americans don’t drink enough water, which leaves them with chapped lips, dry skin, a reduced ability to focus, brain fog, and a raging appetite for junk.


Battle these bad vibes with something as simple as a reusable water bottle! I tote mine around all the time, and I feel so much happier and healthier when I’m hydrated.


Never feel uncomfortable at work again

Workers who are uncomfortable don’t perform their best. I can tell you that when I’m too cold, I straight up cannot focus on the task at hand.


Feeling too cold in the office is a common conundrum for working women. While most offices pump the AC, we’re left in our summer dresses, shivering. Avoid this by always keeping a comfy sweater draped over your chair and a scarf nearby.


It can also be a downer when you have to endure the day with dry, itchy skin. Grab yourself some body lotion with a scent that makes you feel calm.


With these easy tips, you’re sure to feel your best at work. We spend so much time behind our desks—we might as well make them feel a little more like home!
